When approached with the plethora of options for renting a car, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Worry no more, this list has got you covered with the top 10 car rental businesses in the U.S. For those looking for car rental business insurance, please see the attached link.
Alamo is one of the most popular companies for car rental with foreign travelers, not least due to the fact that they have offices based around almost all major airports in North America.
That being said, their nationwide presence isn't actually as sizeable as that of Hertz or Enterprise. However, they still score frequently score very highly on car rental satisfaction surveys.
Since they are both owned by the same group, it is to be expected that these two companies have many similarities with regard to their offers and policies. They are in fact separated by one thing: rental price.
As the name indicates, Budget is the cheaper out of these two options. It offers discounts reaching up to 35% as long as renters prepay.
As one of the least widespread on this list (with only 34 offices across the country), one might wonder how Advantage managed to make it onto such a high spot. The reason for this is because it offers some of the newest car models at extremely budget prices.
Furthermore, although its coverage may seem modest, it still manages quite well for itself with far fewer offices than its competitors.
Alongside Thrifty, Dollar is included in the group known as The Hertz Corporation. It is a budget car rental company with offices in 260 locations around the U.S. Despite its standard prices not being particularly cost-effective compared to competitors it offers regular discounts to bring these default prices to more 'budget' levels.
To get the most value for money out of Avis's car rental services it is recommended to take advantage of their prepaid rates in order to cut the cost. These can add discounts of up to 30% of their regular fees, which is helpful given that, without discount, these are some of the most expensive prices out of all the car rental companies on this list.

With over 3,000 car rental locations - divided between airport areas and residential areas - Hertz is by far one of the biggest car rental companies in the U.S. Its rates are not too expensive and its customer service is very helpful, both of which are reasons behind why it is often so highly rated in North American car rental satisfaction surveys.
Like many of the other companies on this list, National is a sibling company to Enterprise. This smaller counterpart has around 330 outlets placed strategically across the United States, and despite falling slightly in recent car rental satisfaction surveys from its previous position of height, it is still thought of very highly due to the quality of its customer service.
Despite only entering the car rental market in America a decade ago, Sixt has grown at an incredibly fast rate and now has in excess of 60 car rental offices dotted across the country. Their range of cars includes premium American and German models with an average age that doesn't exceed three months old.
Another member of the Hertz Corporation, and in a similar vein to its sibling company Dollar, the primary goal of Thrifty is to provide a budget option for consumers looking to rent a car. Bearing that in mind, it is worth considering that unlike the majority of others on this list, what you see is what you get with Thrifty's prices - there are no options for discounted prepayments.
Enterprise is by far the biggest car rental company in the U.S. by size. Not only does it, itself, own more than 4,500 branches, but when combined with its sibling companies (National and Alamo), this group of car rental companies has a physical presence within 15 miles of nearly 90% of the total U.S. population.
On top of being one of the most accessible car rental companies to the majority, it is also one of the most highly rated in consumer satisfaction surveys.
