Since the Supreme Court is expected to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark case that established the constitutional right to abortion, this summer, some of the country's most prominent and influential celebrities have banded together to advocate for abortion rights and speak out against the Court's decision.
On Friday, the New York Times published a full-page advertising for Planned Parenthood's #BanOffOurBodies campaign. Around 160 artists worked on the campaign. Kendall Jenner, Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus, Camila Cabello, Demi Lovato, Hailey Bieber, Lili Reinhart, Phoebe Bridges, Tommy Dorfman, and Storm Reid have all joined the company.
According to newscreak, the Supreme Court plans a campaign to overturn Roe v. Wade, thus eliminating the constitutional right to abortion. "Our ability to manage our own destiny and bodies is dependent on our ability to access sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion." We are storytellers, artists, and creators. We are the next generation taking power. We are now being deposed of our power. We shall neither withdraw nor submit."
It has been over two weeks since a leaked draft ruling showed that the Supreme Court will vote to overturn Roe. Despite the fact that abortion is currently legal in the United States, if the decision is published in its current form, 26 states are expected to ban abortion, and millions of people across the country will lose access to abortion, with low-income people and people of color disproportionately affected. Even without the looming Supreme Court decision, the previous year was devastating for abortion rights: Texas and Oklahoma already limit the majority of abortions at six weeks, before the majority of women are even aware they are pregnant. The Guttmacher Institute claims that 2021 will be "the worst year for abortion rights in fifty years."
Since the beginning of the campaign, several participants have discussed Roe's death on social media and in person. Bridgers said on her Instagram and Twitter accounts that she had an abortion in 2021. She wrote in her journal, "I went to Planned Parenthood, where they provided me with an abortion pill." "It did not take very long. It should be something that can be used by everyone."
Rodrigo also spoke onstage at a stop on the SOUR tour in Washington, D.C. "Because we're in D.C., I couldn't pass up the opportunity to say how sad I am about the Supreme Court's anticipated verdict," the singer told the crowd. "I hope we can raise our voices to safeguard our right to a safe abortion, a right for which so many people before us fought so hard."
Prior to Bans On On Saturday, an advertisement for Our Bodies Day of Action will air before reproductive rights demonstrations around the nation. Affiliates of Planned Parenthood, the Women's March, UltraViolet, and other national partners are planning events on the day. BansOff.org can help you locate a local event if you like to participate.
